Tarot for All Seasons
Celebrating the Days & Nights of Power
by Christine Jette
Tarot for All Seasons is a slim book (154 pages) that not only teaches traditional and innovative approaches to the tarot, but introduces the Pagan (or witches') Wheel of the Year as well. Christine Jette, author of the wonderful
Tarot Shadow Work, deftly presents tarot and Pagan holidays with respect and admiration. Her appreciation of the tarot as an effective device for self-discovery and development is inspiring. In this warm book, the tarot is shown to be of real value.
The Pagan Wheel of the Year consists of eight major holidays, which each celebrate different aspects of the seasons. These holidays offer specific ways we can connect with the divine (both within and without), expand spiritually, and learn about ourselves. Pagans also celebrate on nights of the full moon, and when the moon is waxing or waning. These are considered powerful nights for Pagans, when psychic and soul work are generally believed to be more intense and meaningful. Doing tarot work on these holidays and days of power can be an effective part of celebration and ritual.
What I really like about Jette's Wheel of the Year tarot spreads is that they all combine the spiritual with the practical. Paganism is often misunderstood. It is a valid religion that encourages inner searching, personal growth, and spiritual awakening. Many Pagans use every opportunity they are given to move forward in spiritual understanding. They are often passionately involved in experiencing their religion fully, and celebrate their holidays with intensity and depth. The tarot spreads Jette has designed specifically for Pagan holidays emphasize this personal growth and self-knowledge. They dig deep, calling upon intuitive wisdom, while also examining more mundane issues and daily truths. They are useful, insightful, and effective; and enrich the Pagan holidays.
Each holiday is introduced with a thorough and easy-to-understand explanation. A ritual is described, sharing the essence of the holiday, and ideas for ritual items are offered as well. Tarot cards appropriate for holiday meditations, scents, herbal teas, and candle colors, are all also suggested. These aspects of the book make it a joyous and complete guide to learning the pagan traditions.
Throughout the book, Jette's love of tarot and the Pagan holidays is evident and inviting. She is such a sincere writer, one can't help anticipate using the tarot spreads for every upcoming holiday. I am not a Pagan, but I enjoy celebrating the seasons; giving thanks for the constantly changing wonders of life. On Halloween especially, I enjoy doing tarot work. With Jette's clear and warm assistance, I can now look forward to incorporating tarot work into other celebrations of seasonal change.
